Ask David Graas why he is using cardboard and cardboard only, and he probably does not have the ultimate answer. It could be the modest nature of the material that suits him  well. Or the fact that it is both lightweight and strong. Or that it is so common that everybody already has an opinion about what it is and where it should be used for and he likes to prove them wrong. Finding unexpected shapes and giving new meaning to a material that is already so familiar to everyone.

Fact of the matter is that cardboard is his starting point, always. The baseline. The blank page on which he writes his stories in 3D. Using the same material for everything he makes, he forces himself to be even more creative. His creativity the key to open the box he has locked himself into. Escaping like Houdini and turning the box inside out. Discovering new spaces to wander into. Always looking to surprise himself and avoiding repetition.
